Gum Disease

Gum Disease (Periodontics)

Periodontics is an area of dentistry primarily focussed on preventing and treating gum disease via the supportive structures surrounding your teeth, namely the gums, jawbone, roots and ligaments.

Preventing and Treating Gum Disease

Periodontal treatment (Periodontics) includes the scaling, root planning and debridement of calculus (tartar), plaque and bacteria below the surface of the gingivae (gums) and is the progression of gingivitis.

Tooth Loss and Gum Disease

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a leading cause of tooth loss in Australian adults; making the practice of regular maintenance appointments just as important for adults as for children. As periodontal disease advances, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth creating tiny pockets where bacteria can accumulate. This can cause an abscess to develop, the tooth to become loose and fall out and even irreparable bone damage.
When to schedule a check up

If your gums are red, swollen and bleed even a little when you clean your teeth, you should schedule a check up and cleaning appointment immediately with our hygienists; as dental hygienists are medically trained professionals who play a key role in the care and detection of gum disease and abnormalities within these areas of your mouth.

Our hygienists work very closely with the dentists at Complete Dental Care.
