Children and Orthodontics

There is nothing like a broad smile on a child’s face. Dental irregularities can become apparent by around age 8 after the first adult molars have come through. Treatment at this age may range from monitoring the growth of the teeth and facial bones, through to fixed or removable braces to prevent crowding.

Although fixed braces may still be required, early intervention can reduce or sometimes eliminate the need for fixed braces by the time your child reaches the all important high school years.

Bad Habits

Many of us are aware children can develop habits as infants that can stay with them well into their preschool and school years. While some are quite harmless and will pass with time and maturation others can be more stubborn and have lifetime ramifications. Some habits may not even be apparent.

Where there is a discrepancy between the upper and lower jaws crowding of the upper and lower incisor teeth can occur as they erupt between the ages of 6-8. Such discrepancies can be caused by skeletal discrepancies, teeth erupting incorrectly or for myofunctional reasons where children who breathe through their mouth experience less lateral and forward maxillary growth.
